New Bankruptcy Law Is More Than Two Years Old
We have found, in practicing under the new law, that nearly all of our
clients have qualified for bankruptcy relief of one kind or another. In
fact, there are some advantages for debtors under the new law. For
example, some exemptions were added, including educational IRAs, and
Social Security payments are not counted toward income in qualifying
for Chapter 7.

Recent Developments in Bankruptcy Law
Within the last two years, the Washington State Legislature has revised the homestead statute to increase the homestead exemption for Washington residents from $40,000 to $125,000. This is great news for our clients, as it means people filing Chapter 7 are even more likely to be keeping their homes.
The Executive Committee of the WSBA Creditor-Debtor Section, of which Gloria is a member, is currently reviewing Washington's personal property exemptions and considering whether to suggest revisions to our state legislature.
